Pre-Owned Models – Testing & Grading

At Footplate, every pre-owned model is individually checked, tested, and graded before it goes live on the website. Because pre-owned stock is one-off and unique, we take extra care to ensure you know exactly what you’re buying.

What we test

Before listing, we check:

  • Running performance (where applicable)
  • Cosmetic condition (body, paint, details and signs of use)
  • Control type, including whether the model is:
    • Analogue (DC)
    • DCC Ready
    • DCC Fitted
    • DCC Sound
    • Radio Control
    • Live Steam (workshop tested)
  • Features and functions, where fitted, such as:
    • Working lights / directional lights
    • Interior lighting
    • Sound
    • Smoke units
  • Completeness, including:
    • Box (if present)
    • Paperwork
    • Detail packs / accessories

Operational grade (how it runs)

We grade powered models using the following benchmarks:

  • Excellent
    Smooth, consistent and reliable running with strong low-speed control.
  • Good
    Runs well overall. Minor noise or slight hesitation may be present but no functional issues.
  • Average
    Runs, but performance is less refined (e.g., noticeable noise, hesitation, or less smooth control). Still functional and saleable.
  • Non-Runner
    Does not run or has a mechanical/electrical fault. These items are only sold where clearly stated as spares/repair.

Condition grade (how it looks)

We only list models that meet our minimum condition standard.

  • As-New
    Minimal or no signs of use. Near mint.
  • Excellent
    Very light signs of handling or use. Highly presentable.
  • Very Good
    Minor cosmetic wear may be present (small marks or light handling signs).
  • Good
    Visible signs of use, but intact, presentable, and suitable for sale.
  • Below Good
    We do not list models below “Good” condition on the website.

Live steam & specialist items

Live steam models (and other specialist items) are tested in our workshop by experienced staff. Any relevant notes will be included in the listing.

What you’ll see on each listing

Each pre-owned listing will clearly state:

  • Operational grade
  • Condition grade
  • Control type (DC / DCC / Sound / RC / Live Steam)
  • Included items (box, paperwork, detail packs)
  • Any notable features (lights, sound, etc.)
  • Any faults or quirks (where applicable)
