Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the questions Footplate gets asked most often. If you can't find what you're looking for, just give Rich or Derek a call on 01562 750076 / 01270 421717 or drop Footplate a message.
How long does the process take?
For smaller collections sent by post, Footplate aims to make an offer within 2–3 working days of receiving your inventory. For larger collections where Rich or Derek visit in person, Footplate will usually make an offer on the day. Payment by bank transfer is made promptly once a collection is picked in person or delivered by courier. When collections are picked up in person payment is made instantly to your preferred account. See How It Works for a full step-by-step overview.
Does Footplate buy damaged or incomplete items?
Yes, in many cases. Condition certainly affects value, but Richard and Derek will always provide an honest assessment rather than simply turning items away. Whilst we're selective about the vintage items we purchase, we're always happy to review what you have. In particular, rare, desirable or historically significant models can still hold considerable value even if they're not in perfect condition. Just let Footplate know what you have, and we'll be happy to advise.
What if I only have one item to sell?
No problem at all. Footplate is happy to consider single items, especially if they're unusual, rare, or from a sought-after manufacturer. There's no minimum quantity, just get in touch and Rich or Derek will take a look.
Do I need the original boxes?
Original packaging does add value, particularly for modern limited-edition models. However, many items, especially vintage pieces, are bought and sold without boxes all the time. Don't let missing boxes put you off getting in touch with Footplate.
How do I get my items to Footplate?
You have two options: post or courier for smaller collections, or Footplate can arrange a home collection for larger ones. Rich and Derek travel all over the UK, see our Areas We Cover page for details. See Footplate's Advice Centre for more detail on packing and sending.
How does Footplate pay?
Footplate typically pays by bank transfer (BACS). Rich and Derek can also offer cash, PayPal, cheque, or store credit if you'd prefer to put the value towards items from the Footplate range. We'll agree the method with you before proceeding.
Does Footplate buy items outside of model railways?
Yes, Footplate is also interested in wider collectables including Dinky Toys, Matchbox, Corgi, Lego, Star Wars, and similar. If you're unsure, just ask Rich or Derek.
Can Footplate provide a written valuation for probate purposes?
Yes. Footplate offers professional probate valuations with written documentation suitable for estate and legal purposes. See our Services page for more information.
Does Footplate travel to collect?
Yes, for larger collections Rich and Derek are happy to visit you at home anywhere in the UK. See our Areas We Cover page for details.
